Spooky Halloween Fun in Flint, MI
With the summer easing off and fall coming through to fill in, the people of Genesee County can now prep for Halloween. Alongside the usual scares, Halloween is a great time to explore Flint and the surrounding area, support local businesses, and enjoy seasonal treats in the brisk autumn outdoors. Whether you’re looking for family activities or some grown-up thrills, the city has plenty to offer. Here are some of the best opportunities for spooky Halloween fun in and around Flint, Michigan, in 2022.
Halloween Trunk-or-Treat
Trick-or-treating is the hallmark of Halloween. If you have kids and want a safe, controlled setting for filling up sacks with candy, consider heading about 14 miles north of Flint for the Trunk-or-Treat event in Clio, Michigan.
This is going to be a whole-family affair. You’ll have not just one but four costume contests — ages 0 to 6, ages 6 to 12, ages 12 and up, and family — with a grand prize in each category. There will also be a contest for the best trunk as well as various local vendors selling their goods.

- Time: The event takes place on Monday, Oct. 24, from 5 to 8 p.m.
- Admission: Entry is free to the public. For vendors, the cost is $20 to reserve an indoor spot and $15 for an outdoor spot.
Flint Handmade Halloween Craft Market
Flint Handmade, a nonprofit organization advocating “creative expression and artistic entrepreneurship” through craft events, also aims to start Halloween early this year with its Halloween Craft Market. The market will feature a host of local vendors. Stop by and stock up on Halloween treats by the Muddy Buddy Boys, check out some seasonal candles by the Flintstone Candle Company, and pick up some adorably strange dolls by artisan Jeanie Byrd, who owns and operates Cuddly Creaturez.
These and many others will be present, slinging their wares. Save the date to support local entrepreneurs and ease into the Halloween spirit.
- Location: The Flint Handmade Halloween Craft Market will take place at the Flint Farmers Market, located at 300 E. First St. here in Flint, Michigan.
- Time: The Halloween Craft Market takes place on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Admission: Admission is free for all.
Past Tense After Dark
If you’re into Halloween for the scares, then consider heading east to nearby Lapeer for Past Tense After Dark, touted as the city’s “premier haunted destination.” The story goes that the Farnsworth family once owned a small hotel in the area until the elder Mr. Farnsworth took his own life, initiating a series of grim events and evil occurrences that eventually culminated in the spiritual corruption of one of the youngest Farnsworths.
Today, you can experience the looming dark presence of the once Farnsworth hotel by participating in any number of the three attractions at Past Tense After Dark. How long can you last in the House of Horrors? Can you make it all the way through the Corn Maze of Fear? And how will you fare on the Hayride of Despair?
- Location: Find Past Tense After Dark at 1965 Farnsworth Road in Lapeer, Michigan.
- Time: The event lasts from Sept. 23 to Oct. 29 on Friday and Saturday nights. The hours are from 7 p.m. to midnight on each night of operation. Weather conditions and city regulations may compel changes in the schedule.
- Admission: Tickets for the House of Horrors attraction are $15, while the Corn Maze of Fear and Hayride of Despair are $10 each. A combination package including all three attractions costs $30.
The Howling Haunted Trail
Just 18 miles south of Flint is Fenton, where you’ll find a new haunted attraction: the Howling Haunted Trail. For six nights only, you’ll have the opportunity to trek into the deep, dark woods, full of unknown creatures, spirits, and other malevolent entities.
Once you finish traversing the haunted trail, join your fellow trekkers for beverages and grub from the beer tents and food truck. Given the frightening nature of the event, children and individuals who scare easily should avoid it. All others are welcome to share in the scares.
- Location: Find the Howling Haunted Trail at 13575 N. Fenton Road in Fenton, Michigan.
- Time: The event takes place over each of the three weekends preceding Halloween (Oct. 7-8, 14-15, and 21-22). The hours are 7-11 p.m. on each night of operation.
- Admission: Admission is $25 on Fridays and $30 on Saturdays if you buy online. Tickets cost $5 more at the gate. VIP tickets are $45.
